We appreciate all the heart-felt condolences.
A date for memorial services has not been set. We hope to have one soon.
Friends and family are currently working together so that the Soaring School may continue. We hope to have that happen soon.
Unfortunately, the school will remain closed until some issues have been address. We apologize for any problems this may cause and ask for your understanding.

We regret to report that our long time friend and leader Fredrick Robinson passed away at approximately 7:20pm on Friday November 7th, 2008.
Great Western Soaring School will be closed for the next week.
Today is Tuesday, October 7, 2008
Yesterday, (Monday) We enjoyed BOW WAVES and a few thermals over the higher ground. Many customers gave rides to their friends. It was especially nice since there was not a bump in the air. If you have not read about bow waves, watch this site and when I get time, I will publish a detailed description of the phenomenon.
Our SparrowHawk is for sale. SN 15, very low hours, no damage history. Immediate availability. Make offer! Has all the goodies.
Our new DG 1000 is in the container and on the ship. We expect delivery at the end of this month. It will have all the best of everything!
We are looking for two full time instructors. If it is you, the pay will be $60,00 per instruction hour. With a weekly minimum guaranteed.
To see changes that have been made, click on About us.
The soaring conditions are extremely good. Thermals are soarable by 10:AM
If you are just beginning, smooth air in the morning may help. We will be open the rest of the summer at 9AM. Our instructor schedule is rather tight, so book well ahead.
Thank you Bob Oberto for hosting a large group of friends on Sunday.
Monday, July 21 2008. What wonderful soaring conditions we have enjoyed. Lots of really good things have happened. New solos, new ratings, new instructors passing their tests. New customers are filling our schedule two weeks in advance.
Our operating hours have changed.
Thermals are so strong and early, we are open at 9:00 AM but will often open at 8:00 AM to offer smooth air for new students. We had considered being closed on thursdays, but customer demand says "STAY OPEN". We will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only.
The SparrowHawk has only 15 hours on it. It is licensed in the EXPERIMENTAL catagory, so it can be insured. It can be yours for only, (GASP) $48,000 including thousands of $ of installed extras.
Look closely...That is the Crystalaire country club under the wing. You can stay there when you come to fly. If you come for 2 days of rental or instruction, I'll pay for your lodge. If you want to dine there, wear something nice other than denims. No tie required. There is a pool, cocktails, and breakfast served until 2:00 pm. Dinners on friday evening. (Closed on Mondays.)
Yvonne Robinson...CFI, took the picture.
We have all of the wrinkles ironed out of the operation changes being tested. Publication should follow soon. There have been no problems during testing and all of the test participants like the shanges.
I sleep better at the end of the day, not having to see things go wrong. Regards to eve
ryone! Fred Robinson.
Hey Everybody! We have a nice slick SparrowHawk for sale! It has about 15 hours used as a demonstrator. It has an N number, licensed in the experimental catagory. It can be insured! No trailer, but all the trailer fixtures come with it. It is loaded with instruments and has water ballast tanks in the wings if you want to set records. It has a damage free history and you can have it now, right out of the hangar. Check things out and make a reasonable offer. Fred Robinson.

Mike K. (CF) flew to Green River UT
Thermals up to 12,000 feet.
As an instructor, I am learning and trying to learn even better ways to communicate with students. Hopefully it will simplify the task of teaching and learning. You might think that after 30,000 flights, I should know it all. I could continue to teach as successfully as I have in the past and continue to dev
0e1lop good soaring pilots, but I am not satisfied with just being good. Better is better.
Well, I don't know it all! New ideas and concepts continue to flow with each new incoming student. For example, I have developed a better way to teach landings that reduces student stress and produces really good results.
Changes in procedures are developing farther and turning out better than I hoped. Bear with me and we will all fly longer and higher.
As always, safety and the cost of soaring is a daily concern. You may have heard about some of the changes that are being considered that should help improve the the safety of flight at Crystalaire. Please understand that the changes are being investigated and tested. Until all changes have been completely tested and reviewed by a group of respected people, Please fly safely, keep your eyes open and make a good landing. We are operating in "SAFE MODE" and looking out for you.
One thing that should be considered as a new operating practice, and in use as of now...We are are removing the words "HURRY and RUSH" in all of our actions. We have seen the results of a pilot or crew that... "DIDN'T TAKE TIME TO DO IT RIGHT".
We are trying to keep the entire landing area open for anyone that appears to have landing intentions. There will be a "KEEP BACK" LINE 50 ft north of the edge of the pavement. All gliders staging for takeoff will be kept off the runway until the pilot and crew are on board and have completed preperations for flight.
When a tow plane is available, and no one appears to be landing, we use our crew, golf carts and (any help available) and move the glider to the takeoff position. In that manner we hope to occupy the runway no more than two minutes.
We will monitor two radios. The office will monitor 123.00 and reply as "Crystal Office" to anyone calling "Crystal office".123.00 is a very crowded frequency and we may not hear a request for communication unless the request is very clear and specific. This is a private airport and is not controlled by radio. The office person may be very busy and not be aware of traffic conditions.
The ground crew will listen to 123.5 for anyone intending to land. Call them using the phrase "Crystal crew" and advise them of your needs. The crew is trained to be alert for landing traffic and to clear the pavement when needed.
Most of the school traffic will land short of the pavement and clear for anyone behind them. If you choose, use any part of the airport that will permit a safe landing. If you land long and need help to clear the landing areas, we will send it to you.
We are working to define traffic near the airport, but those of us involved in the testing will use procedures that will not interfere with you. Remember that sailplanes are skinny, the color of the sky and very hard to see. For safety reasons, the ground crew is required to stay on the north side of the runway. Most of the time, their backs are to you and may not see you.
That's all for now. Thank you for your friendship and your business. Come fly and enjoy the best soaring site near Los Angeles. Fred Robinson

EARLY AND BIG THERMALS AGAIN !
Drew Thomson soloed on Thursday his 14th Birthday.
The third soaring pilot in the family. His grandfather, the winning Grahm, Son Brian and now Drew.
Grahm was a good friend to all soaring pilots and flew fighters from carriers in UK waters during WWII.
Brian flew with me and soloed on his 14th BD.
Drew has the fly genes and demonstrated a perfect solo. Mom, Dad, and grandmother, Helen Tomson were very proud!
It was my great pleasure to see such life long continuity.
Fred Robinson.
Beat the high cost of fuel:
Fred Says that he will cover the cost of a room at the Crystalaire Country Club for anyone who wishes to schedule two consecutive days flying with us.
