A paved road rises in switchbacks from Lone Pine, over the crest, and into the wilderness at Cottonwood Meadows.

The top hairpin overlooks a big canyon facing south. This place is such a fine lift source that it is famous among hang glider pilots and sailplane pilots alike. They use it to launch from, and we use it for an optimum climb before crossing to the east - and also as a prime objective when crossing the other way.
