Ahead and on the right lie hundreds of square miles of forested wilderness, high but not very mountainous.  Beyond that further to the west is Kern Canyon, a no-man's land for sailplane pilots.  If we venture out west of the crest, we must be careful to keep enough altitude for escaping to lower desert terrain east of the mountains.
