The small, forested range known as the Piutes lies left of this north-looking photo.  Much better lift is usually found on the lower desert hills out of sight to the right.   The airstrip is in the green valley floor, adjacent to the road.  Pilots who get low here almost always make a save - because as legend has it, "you can land at Kelso, but when your crew finally gets there, they'll kill you..."
