We must climb as high as possible before leaving the San Gorgonio area. It is 22 miles across the Banning Pass, and San Jacinto, our turnpoint, is itself nearly 11,000 feet high !

The air between these two enormous mountains will probably offer no lift - with a crosswind usually strong from right to left.
