Starting in the nineteen sixties, Henry Combs began making very long flights straight out from here in his new Libelle sailplane. Before retiring, Henry flew 200 diamond distance flights!
Since then many pilots have joined this unofficial club, and no one knows how many thousands of cross-country miles have been flown.
The goal for most in the 'Crystal Squadron' is usually to reach at least: 500 Kilometers (316 miles).
